Home for the Holidays

Home for the Holidays

The idea of home feels so different this year. I've always appreciated environment and the importance of space, but this season — with its incredible valleys and peaks — the understanding of home as a shelter amid all the wild and noise of the world feels so important. A place of your own is the truest form of luxury.

Over the past two and a half years, we've been on the journey of building our family home in Nashville's Germantown neighborhood. We were lucky enough to find an empty plot on a historic street that was densely packed with charm and possibility. We began dreaming up big windows and wide hallways with our architect, Pfeffer Torode, in August 2018, and just moved in at the tail-end of October 2020.

It has been a journey. And the punch list of things to finish and details to wrap up seems a mountain. When you design for a living, your own project has the uncanny ability of finding its way to the back of the priority list.

I wanted to wait to share our home with you when it was perfect, but this isn't a season where perfect feels honest. In the real world of families and babies, sickness and health, want and abundance, there are always rough edges, elements to mend, things to attend to.

But the beautiful thing about designing a home is that you shouldn't set out to make it perfect. Perfect is a posture. Perfect isn't inviting or comfortable. You can't live with perfect. Instead, you should create a space that feels like the best version of yourself. A real home that's a landing spot where you feel inspired, rejuvenated, and at peace.

We spruced up the living area for our first Christmas under the new roof. I'll be sharing more of our home over the next few weeks — including all the sources, lessons, and design tips! — but in the meantime I wanted to share this warm, holiday sneak peek with you.

Happy Christmas, friends. Enjoy your home this year and those you share it with. There is so much to be grateful for this season.
